PulaTechConf 2026 was held in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering in Pula. The conference brings together technology, innovation, research, and research management, providing a forum for the academic community, experts, and representatives from various sectors to share knowledge and experience.
As part of the conference programme, Head of the Department for Mobility, International Relations and Programmes, Ivona Peternel PhD, delivered a presentation entitled "Who Stands Behind Research?", dedicated to research management as an increasingly important profession within the European Research Area. The presentation highlighted that successful research projects rely not only on researchers themselves but also on professionals responsible for developing project ideas, identifying suitable funding opportunities, building international partnerships, managing projects administratively and financially, and disseminating and communicating results.
The presentation on the CARDEA project was the central event of the conference. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for greater recognition and further professionalisation of the role of research managers. Their expertise plays an important role in strengthening institutional research capacities, improving participation in international projects and connecting science more effectively with societal needs. This field lies at the heart of the CARDEA project, which aims to develop clearer professional frameworks, competencies and career advancement opportunities for research managers within the European Research Area. More information about the project and training opportunities for research managers is available on the CARDEA Hub website.
The presentation also introduced Horizon Europe, the European Union’s key funding programme for research and innovation. European Researchers’ Night was presented as an example of connecting science with the wider public. Participation in PulaTechConf 2026 further highlighted the need to connect technological development and innovation with the professional management of research processes. Such an interdisciplinary approach is an important prerequisite for developing high-quality projects, strengthening research institutions and creating a sustainable European research and innovation system.
More information about the conference is available on the official PulaTechConf 2026 website.
